Not for Show, But for Him

“Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.” — Matthew 6:1 (ESV)

Some people serve God like they’re trying out for a part in a play. It’s all about the spotlight, the applause, the social media shout-outs. But serving the Lord isn’t a stage performance it’s a heart posture. True service isn’t seen by everyone, but it’s always seen by the One who matters most. Jesus warned about those who “do all their deeds to be seen by others,” and then He turned around and praised the widow who gave in secret, unnoticed by the crowd, but deeply honored by heaven. The real ones? They ain’t looking for credit. They’re looking for Christ.

When you serve just to be seen, your reward ends when the applause dies out. But when you serve from love when you mop a floor, fix a toilet, show up early, stay late, and love people like Jesus even when no one’s watching you’re storing up eternal treasure. Heaven records things earth forgets. Don’t let your obedience be dictated by optics. Don’t let your passion burn out because someone didn’t post about your effort. If Jesus called you to it, He’s watching how you walk through it. He’s the audience of One.

Let’s shift the motive. If I sing, I’ll sing for Him. If I preach, I’ll preach for Him. If I pass out bulletins or take out the trash, I’ll do it with joy, because He’s worth it. We don’t serve to impress—we serve to express our love for a God who laid it all down for us. Let the world chase spotlight. I’m chasing surrender.

Reflection:

Am I more concerned with being seen or being faithful? Would I still do what I do if nobody knew I did it but God? Today, let’s make it about Jesus again—not our image, not our praise, just His glory.

Prayer:

Lord, cleanse my motives. Strip away any ego, pride, or need to be seen. Let me serve You with a humble heart and a joyful spirit. Help me do it all for You and You alone because You’re worthy. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Love you,

PJ
