Avoiding a Patronizing Attitude

“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves.” — Philippians 2:3 (NIV)

It’s easy to fall into a patronizing attitude without realizing it. Sometimes we think we’re helping others, but our tone or actions may come across as condescending. In those moments, we unintentionally communicate that we think we’re better or more knowledgeable than others.

Jesus modeled a life of humility and servanthood. He never looked down on those who needed help; instead, He lifted them up with love, dignity, and respect. In Philippians, Paul encourages us to value others above ourselves, not thinking more highly of our own abilities or knowledge.

Patronizing behavior doesn’t reflect Christ’s humility. It’s a form of pride, which can damage relationships and hinder our witness. When we approach others with true humility, we show the love of Christ in a way that builds them up instead of making them feel small.

Lord, help me to be aware of my attitude toward others. Give me a heart of humility, valuing others the way You do. Help me avoid any patronizing words or actions, and instead, reflect Your love and kindness in all I do. Amen.

Love you,

PJ
