Crying Out to God

“I call on the Lord in my distress, and he answers me.” – Psalm 120:1

In moments of overwhelming pain, uncertainty, or fear, there is a deep need within us to cry out. These cries can be words, tears, or even silent groans too deep to express. The psalmist knew this intimately, writing countless verses about calling on the Lord in distress. What sets these cries apart, though, is the unwavering assurance that God hears and responds.

Crying out to God isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s an act of faith. It acknowledges our limitations and magnifies God’s ability to meet us where we are. When Peter walked on water and began to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” (Matthew 14:30). Immediately, Jesus reached out and rescued him. This simple act of crying out brought God’s intervention.

Sometimes, we hesitate to cry out because we feel we should “hold it together” or that our struggles are insignificant compared to others. But Scripture assures us that God is attentive to every cry. David wrote, “The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles” (Psalm 34:17).

When you feel like life’s waves are crashing in, remember that God is not distant. He is waiting for your cry, ready to step into your situation with His peace, power, and provision. Your cry doesn’t need to be perfect or eloquent; it just needs to be honest.

1. When was the last time you cried out to God in a moment of distress? How did He respond?

2. What is stopping you from fully laying your burdens at God’s feet and crying out to Him today?

3. How can you encourage others to turn to God in their own moments of distress?

Heavenly Father, thank You for being a God who listens. In my moments of despair and uncertainty, help me to remember that I can cry out to You. You are my refuge and my deliverer, always near and ready to respond. Teach me to trust You more deeply and to rely on Your strength in my weakness. May my cries bring me closer to Your heart and remind me of Your unfailing love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Love you,

PJ
