Dealing with Difficult People
“Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.” - Romans 12:14 (NIV)
Encountering difficult people is something we all face. Whether it’s a rude coworker, an unkind neighbor, or even someone within our family, these situations can test our patience and our faith. When we encounter people who are challenging, our natural instinct might be to retaliate or avoid them altogether. But as Christians, we are called to a higher standard, one that follows the example of Christ.
Jesus dealt with many difficult people during His ministry. From the Pharisees who constantly challenged Him to those who mocked and betrayed Him, He faced resistance at every turn. Yet, His response was consistent: love, grace, and truth. In Romans 12:14, Paul reminds us to “bless those who persecute you.” This isn’t just a call to be polite or to refrain from arguing; it’s a call to actively seek the good of others, even those who make life hard for us.
Dealing with difficult people doesn’t mean ignoring the problem or pretending the hurt isn’t there. It means choosing to respond with grace when it would be easier to react with anger. It means praying for those who hurt us, asking God to work in their hearts and change their lives. It’s about trusting that God sees our struggle and will give us the strength to endure it.
Think about a time when someone was unkind to you. How did you respond? Did you react out of emotion, or did you show patience and grace? When we choose to respond with kindness, we reflect Christ’s love to others. It’s not always easy, but God sees our effort and is pleased when we honor Him by loving those who are difficult to love.
Take a moment today to pray for someone who has hurt you. Ask God to help you see them through His eyes and give you the strength to love them, even when it’s challenging. Remember, you may be the only example of Jesus they see.
Heavenly Father, I ask for Your help in dealing with difficult people. It’s not easy to show love to those who hurt or frustrate me, but I know that’s what You have called me to do. Give me the strength to respond with grace, the patience to endure, and the love to see them as You do. Help me be a light to those around me, even when it’s hard. Amen.
Love you,
PJ
