Facing Depressing Events
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” – Psalm 34:18 (NIV)
Life is filled with moments of joy, but it is also marked by seasons of trials and heartache. Whether through personal loss, unexpected hardships, or unfulfilled hopes, depressing events can shake our faith and leave us feeling vulnerable and overwhelmed. It is in these dark times that we must remind ourselves of God’s unchanging nature and His promise to be near.
The Bible does not shy away from the reality of suffering. David, the author of many Psalms, often wrote from places of deep sorrow. Yet, in the midst of his pain, he discovered a profound truth—God’s presence was never far. Psalm 34:18 assures us that the Lord is not only aware of our brokenness, but He is actively near, offering comfort and salvation.
When facing seasons of depression or discouragement, it is crucial to stay connected to God through prayer and His Word. This connection does not necessarily take the pain away immediately, but it helps us recognize that we are not alone. God’s love for us remains steadfast, and He strengthens us to endure what feels unbearable.
Reflect on the promise found in Isaiah 41:10: “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” This assurance means that no matter how deep the shadows may seem, God’s light is present and capable of guiding us through.
Think of a time when you faced a discouraging event. How did you experience God’s presence during that time, or in hindsight, can you see how He carried you through? Even in moments when it feels like hope is slipping away, remind yourself that God’s nearness and promises are unchanging.
Heavenly Father, I come to You with a heart that sometimes feels weighed down by sorrow. Remind me that You are always near, especially in moments of despair. Help me to hold fast to Your promises and find comfort in Your unchanging love. Strengthen me for each step, and fill my spirit with hope that is rooted in You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Love You,
PJ
