Guarding Our Words – Honoring God in How We Treat Others
“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” – Ephesians 4:29
It’s easy to laugh at someone’s appearance or make a sarcastic remark without thinking about the lasting impact of our words. In a culture where humor often comes at someone else’s expense, it can feel harmless to join in or even initiate such comments. But as followers of Christ, we are called to a higher standard.
The Bible teaches us that every person is made in the image of God (Genesis 1:27). This truth alone should cause us to pause before criticizing or mocking someone’s looks. When we make fun of others, we are dishonoring God’s creation.
James 3:9 reminds us that with the same tongue we use to praise God, we can also curse those made in His image. This contradiction should grieve our hearts and motivate us to speak words of kindness and encouragement instead of ridicule.
Jesus calls us to love one another as He has loved us (John 13:34). His love is not conditional on outward appearance but is rooted in the value of each person’s soul. When we mock someone’s appearance, we fail to reflect the love of Christ and risk sowing seeds of insecurity, hurt, and division.
1. Examine Your Heart: Ask yourself why you feel the need to comment on someone’s appearance. Is it to feel superior, fit in, or get a laugh? Confess these motivations to God and seek His forgiveness.
2. Choose to Build Up: Replace criticism with compliments. Find ways to affirm the beauty of God’s creation in others.
3. Stand Against Mockery: If you hear others making fun of someone, take a stand. Redirect the conversation or gently remind them of the value of kindness.
4. Pray for Grace: Ask God to help you see others through His eyes and to guard your words so they reflect His love.
Heavenly Father, forgive me for the times I have used my words to tear others down instead of building them up. Help me to see every person as Your unique and beloved creation. Teach me to speak words that honor You and uplift those around me. May my words and actions reflect the love and grace of Jesus Christ. In His name, Amen.
Spend the day speaking only words of encouragement. When you’re tempted to make a critical or sarcastic remark about someone’s appearance, stop and pray for them instead. Watch how your heart and your relationships begin to change.
Love you,
PJ
