Healing from Church Hurt
“Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.” - Colossians 3:13 (NIV)
Church is meant to be a place of love, support, and spiritual growth, but the reality is that sometimes it becomes a place of deep hurt. Whether through misunderstanding, judgment, or betrayal, church hurt can be especially painful because it involves the very community that represents Christ’s love. It can leave us feeling disillusioned, betrayed, and distant from God.
Yet, in these moments of hurt, we are reminded that the church is made up of imperfect people. Just as we have been forgiven by God, we are called to extend forgiveness to others, even when it is hard. This doesn’t mean that the pain isn’t real or that it should be ignored. Instead, it is an invitation to seek healing, to confront the hurt with grace, and to allow God’s love to bring restoration.
If you have been hurt by the church, remember that God sees your pain and He is close to the brokenhearted. Healing may take time, and it might involve setting boundaries or having difficult conversations. But don’t let the actions of people drive you away from God. Instead, let them drive you closer to Him, where true comfort and healing can be found.
1. Have you been holding onto hurt caused by someone within the church? How has it affected your relationship with God?
2. What steps can you take today toward forgiveness, even if it’s just a small step?
3. How can you contribute to making the church a place of love and healing for others?
Heavenly Father, I come to You with a heart that has been hurt by those within the church. It’s hard to understand why such pain can come from a place that represents Your love. Help me to forgive those who have hurt me, just as You have forgiven me. Give me the grace to heal and the wisdom to seek reconciliation where possible. Guide me to find strength in You, and help me to be a source of love and healing for others who may also be hurting. Thank You for being my refuge and comfort. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Love you,
PJ
