Judging for Yourself

Scripture Reading: John 7:24 (NIV)

“Stop judging by mere appearances, but instead judge correctly.”

We live in a world where opinions are everywhere—about people, their motives, and their actions. It’s tempting to form judgments about others based on what we hear from others, but Jesus challenges us to rise above this. He calls us to judge correctly, not relying on appearances or hearsay but seeking truth rooted in discernment and love.

When someone shares their negative opinions about another person, it’s easy to absorb their bias and form an opinion without truly understanding the situation. However, Proverbs 18:13 warns, “To answer before listening—that is folly and shame.” Listening to gossip or relying on others’ judgments can lead to unfair and often inaccurate conclusions.

As Christians, we are called to seek God’s perspective, not the world’s. This means reserving judgment until we’ve prayed, sought wisdom, and perhaps even gone directly to the source. Just as Jesus shows mercy and grace to us, we are called to extend the same to others. Refusing to listen to others’ negative opinions and choosing instead to judge for ourselves not only honors God but also protects relationships and fosters unity.

When we choose to focus on understanding rather than assuming, we reflect the character of Christ. Jesus never let the opinions of others dictate how He treated people; He saw their hearts and extended love and grace. We are called to do the same.

1. Have you ever formed an opinion about someone based on what others have said? How did it affect your view of that person?

2. How can you guard your heart against gossip and unfair judgments?

3. What steps can you take to seek God’s truth about someone instead of relying on others’ opinions?

Lord, help me to see others through Your eyes, not through the lens of others’ opinions. Guard my heart against gossip and unfair judgments, and give me the wisdom to seek truth and understanding. Teach me to love as You love, always extending grace and mercy. Let my words and thoughts about others reflect Your heart, and guide me to judge rightly and with compassion. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Love you,

PJ
