Knowing the Will of God
“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.”
Jeremiah 29:11 (ESV)
In our Christian walk, one of the most frequent questions we ask is, “What is God’s will for my life?” Whether we’re facing a big decision or just trying to make it through the day, we often wonder how we can discern God’s direction. The Bible assures us that God has a plan for each of us. His plans are not only good, but they are also meant to give us a future filled with hope. So how can we discern His will amidst all of life’s choices and distractions?
First, knowing the will of God begins with knowing His Word. The Bible is God’s revealed truth, guiding us in wisdom, righteousness, and understanding. When we spend time in Scripture, we open ourselves to hearing from God. His commands, promises, and the examples of faithful believers all point us toward a life that aligns with His will. God’s will for our lives will never contradict what He has already spoken through His Word.
Second, prayer is a crucial part of seeking God’s will. As we pray, we invite God to search our hearts, reveal any selfish desires, and align our requests with His purposes. Jesus set an example in the Garden of Gethsemane when He prayed, “Not my will, but Yours be done.” Prayer isn’t about convincing God to do things our way; it’s about surrendering and trusting His perfect plan.
Third, seek wise counsel from those who walk faithfully with the Lord. God often uses other believers to speak into our lives and provide guidance. Proverbs 11:14 says, “Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.” Fellowship with other believers and seeking their wisdom can be a powerful way to discern God’s direction.
Finally, we can look to the peace God gives us when we’re on the right path. Colossians 3:15 tells us to let the peace of Christ rule in our hearts. If you’re feeling confused or anxious, it may be a sign to pause and ask the Lord to make His will clearer to you.
When we earnestly seek God’s will, we must remember that it’s a journey of trust, faith, and surrender. Sometimes, His direction may not be immediately clear, but God promises to guide us step by step. Take time to reflect on your life today. Are you spending time in His Word? Are you bringing your concerns to Him in prayer? Are you open to godly counsel, and are you sensitive to His peace? Ask the Lord to lead you, trusting that He is always faithful to those who seek Him.
Heavenly Father, thank You for having a plan and purpose for my life. Help me to know Your will and to seek Your guidance above all else. Teach me to listen to Your voice in Scripture, to seek You in prayer, and to trust the counsel of faithful believers around me. Fill my heart with Your peace as I wait on You. Let Your will, not mine, be done in my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Love you,
PJ
