Serving Without Seeking Credit
“But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” – Matthew 6:3-4
In a world that often measures success by recognition and applause, the idea of serving quietly, without seeking credit, can feel countercultural. But as followers of Christ, we’re called to serve with humility and sincerity, not for the approval of others but for the glory of God. Jesus Himself exemplified this throughout His ministry, often performing miracles and offering teachings quietly, even telling those He healed to “tell no one.” His focus was on obedience to the Father and compassion for people, not public praise.
When we serve or contribute without expecting credit, we free ourselves from the trap of pride and open ourselves up to a deeper sense of fulfillment. Acts of kindness, generosity, and service done in secret reflect a heart that’s truly surrendered to God. It becomes less about who sees us and more about who we serve. And as Jesus reminds us, God sees everything, even the things done in private. His “well done” is worth infinitely more than any human recognition we could ever receive.
Choosing to live in this way isn’t always easy. Sometimes, we may feel overlooked or underappreciated, wondering if our efforts matter. But in those moments, remember that God’s reward isn’t measured in earthly accolades but in eternal treasures. Our small, hidden acts of love and kindness are precious in His sight. When we serve with a pure heart, God uses our efforts in ways we might never fully see or understand. And there is a quiet joy that comes from knowing we’ve made a difference for His kingdom, even if no one else knows.
Father, help me to serve with a humble heart, seeking only to glorify You. Teach me to find joy in quiet acts of love, without needing recognition. Remind me that You see every sacrifice, every small gesture, and that You value what’s done in secret. May my life reflect Your heart, showing love without the need for acknowledgment. Thank You for being my constant audience, Lord. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Love you,
PJ
