A Word from PJ
If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person's religion is worthless.
James 1:26
In James 1:26, we are confronted with a sobering truth: our words reveal the condition of our hearts. The verse warns us that if we claim to be religious but fail to control our tongues, our faith is essentially hollow. In other words, outward expressions of religion—like attending church, serving in ministries, or following rituals—are meaningless if our speech is not aligned with godly principles.
To “bridle” the tongue means to bring it under control, just as a bridle guides a horse. Our words have the power to build up or tear down, to bless or to curse. If we allow careless, angry, or harmful words to flow from our mouths, we are deceiving ourselves about the authenticity of our faith. Jesus said that “out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks” (Matthew 12:34). Therefore, what we say reflects the true state of our hearts.
This verse challenges us to examine not just our actions but also the way we speak to others. Do our words reflect love, kindness, and grace? Or do they reveal impatience, criticism, or bitterness? True religion is not just about what we do; it’s about who we are becoming in Christ, and that transformation should be evident in our speech.
Today, let’s ask God to help us bridle our tongues and use our words to reflect His love. True religion flows from a heart that’s submitted to Christ, and when our hearts are aligned with Him, our words will naturally reflect His grace and truth.
Love You,
PJ
