When You Feel God Has Abandoned You

“Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” – Hebrews 13:5b

Life can sometimes feel overwhelming. You may face moments when your prayers seem to bounce off the ceiling, and you’re left wondering, “God, where are You?” Maybe you’ve endured a series of hardships, and it feels as if heaven has gone silent. These moments can leave you feeling abandoned, but the truth of God’s Word reminds us otherwise: God is always with us.

The Bible is filled with examples of faithful men and women who experienced moments of despair. David, a man after God’s own heart, cried out in Psalm 22:1, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Even Jesus, while bearing the weight of the world’s sin on the cross, echoed those words. But we must remember that God’s apparent silence does not mean His absence.

God’s promises are not dictated by our feelings. His Word assures us that He will never leave us nor forsake us. Even in the valley of the shadow of death, He walks beside us (Psalm 23:4). When we feel abandoned, it may be an invitation to draw closer to Him, trusting in His unfailing love and faithfulness.

1. Pray Honestly – Tell God how you’re feeling. He is big enough to handle your questions and your pain. Like David, pour out your heart to Him.

2. Remember His Promises – Spend time in Scripture, particularly verses that affirm His constant presence, such as Isaiah 41:10 or Romans 8:38-39.

3. Look Back – Reflect on how God has been faithful in the past. Remembering His past goodness can strengthen your faith in the present.

4. Lean on Others – Surround yourself with fellow believers who can pray with you, encourage you, and remind you of God’s truth.

When have you felt abandoned by God, and how did you respond? Can you recall a time when you later realized He was with you all along? Take a moment to thank Him for His faithfulness, even when you couldn’t feel it at the time.

Father, I come to You feeling lost and alone. I don’t understand why I feel this way, but I know Your Word says You will never leave me nor forsake me. Help me trust in that promise even when I don’t feel it. Open my eyes to see Your presence in my life and remind me of Your faithfulness. Strengthen my heart, Lord, and help me to walk by faith and not by sight. Thank You for Your unfailing love and Your constant care. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Love you,

PJ
